Cuando Mick Jagger y Keith Richards preguntaron a Axl Rose e Izzy Stradlin qué tema les gustaría interpretar con ellos sobre el escenario, estos contestaron que Salt of the Earth, una canción que los Stones no habían vuelto a tocar en directo desde hacía más de una década. Incluso Izzy tuvo que recordarle al propio Keith como se tocaba. Esto ocurría un 19 de Diciembre de 1989 durante la gira americana de presentación del Steel Wheels, con Guns n' Roses como teloneros de lujo. Esa misma noche subieron con los Rolling Stones Eric Clapton y John Lee Hooker.
